Rolling Plains farmland around Abilene
Abilene is the largest city in Taylor County and its seat of government. The legislature created the county in 1858, and it was organized in 1878. The county lies in the Rolling Plains across about 917 square miles, split east to west by the Callahan Divide between the Brazos and Colorado watersheds. Average rainfall is near 23.6 inches a year.[1]
Wheat was the leading crop by acreage in 2022 at about 29,200 acres, ahead of hay and cotton, and the county held roughly 161,000 acres of cropland alongside 176,000 acres of pasture. Large open fields like these are a good fit for aerial work, since an aircraft covers acreage quickly without rutting wet ground.[2]
