Matagorda County lies on the Texas Coastal Prairie, and its county seat is Bay City. The county was among the first 23 created in 1836, when Texas was still a republic. The Colorado River crosses it from north to south, and the long barrier island called Matagorda Peninsula shelters Matagorda Bay.^[1]
