Robert Lee is the seat of county government and the largest town, a role it took from Hayrick in 1891, two years after the county was formed in 1889. About 911 square miles of prairie, hills and river valley sit here, with sandy loam and red soils and elevations rising from 1,800 feet in the south to 2,600 feet in the north.[1]
USDA data for 2022 show 433 farms averaging 1,105 acres, with about 420,000 of the county's 478,560 farm acres in pasture. Spread out and sometimes rough, ranch land like this is hard to cover quickly on the ground, which is where an aircraft earns its keep.[2]
